Lesko Shows You Where To Get The Money…
To Start or Expand A Business
One thing to keep in mind is that over 1,000,000 entrepreneurs every year get government money to start or expand their business. If you don’t want to use our books, I will show you how we go about collecting the information we put inside. There is no magic to identifying programs. It just takes hard work.
- Catalog of Federal Domestic AssistanceThis is the government’s major source of federal money programs. This catalog contains federal programs only. You can search by key word or any other way you wish. I even copy from this book. Remember nothing in the government is copyrighted. www.cfda.gov
- Your State Department of Economic DevelopmentEvery state has offices that will help you for free with any aspect of a business or non-profit organization. They will also have their own grant and loan programs that help businesses get started or expand. Find you state economic development office at http://www.govengine.com/
- Your City and County GovernmentsA lot of federal and state money is given to city, county and other local jurisdictions to hand out to entrepreneurs. If your city or county does not have a program that suits you contact your surrounding cities and counties. Go where the money is. A good starting place for this is http://www.govengine.com/localgov/index.html
- Non-Profit OrganizationsLocal development groups, national and local non-profits and countless other non-governmental organizations offer free money, low interest loans and free services to entrepreneurs. We have even identified 150 such groups that offer money just to entrepreneurs that have no money. These can be the most difficult to find. Look at this database of non-profits that help entrepreneurs at http://www.microenterpriseworks.org/nearyou/. But don’t stop there. There are thousands more. Check your local library to see if they have information on additional sources.
- Venture CapitalThis is money from angels, also known as venture capitalists. These are individuals, government sponsored organizations or private organizations that invest in your business because it is a good idea. These people will also want to own a percentage of your business.
- A Fall-Back PositionContact your local Small Business Development Center in your state. They offer free consulting that will help you find money, plan a strategy, or provide you with assistance for any kind of management, technical or financial problem if you are a business or non-profit organization. You can find your local office at http://www.sba.gov/sbdc/sbdcnear.html
- Learn About Government ContractsThe government purchases more of everything than anyone else in the world and they do it all over the country. Finding out how to get a business grant is a one-time thing. A government contract you can keep getting again and again. Your local Small Business Development Center can help you locate government contracts. You can find your local office at http://www.sba.gov/sbdc/sbdcnear.html
